We realize that many patients are apprehensive about receiving dental care. For patients who may bekitty anxious, we want them to be completely comfortable. That’s why our practice offers sedation dentistry. Also known as sleep dentistry, this technique allows our patients to feel comfortable and relaxed during any dental procedure. Anxiety should never prevent a patient from having the beautiful and healthy smile she or he deserves. We pioneered providing sedation dentistry in 1981 because we recognized that many people are anxious about receiving dental care.

When you come to Dr. Rye’s practice, he will listen to all of your concerns. He then discusses all of the methods used at Rye Smiles for Life to help make your dental treatment as comfortable as possible. Together, both Dr. Rye and you can decide on a Personalized Dental Plan that will achieve your goals while ensuring utmost comfort.

Many options are available at Rye Smiles for Life to provide for optimal comfort, including oral sedation, IV sedation, Nitrous Oxide (sometimes called laughing gas), and general anesthesia.

Many patients plagued by dental anxiety and some who require extensive work find that conscious oral sedation best meet their needs. The conscious oral sedation process begins with the patient taking a small pill about an hour before the dental appointment. Upon arriving at our office, you will begin to feel drowsy. Due to the sedative effects of the medication, sleep dentistry patients need a companion to drive them to our office and drive home following the procedure. At our office, a member of the staff will escort you into our comfort room and wrap you in a thick, warm blanket. We monitor your condition throughout the procedure so that we can ensure that you remain comfortable through the entire visit.

Once Dr. Rye has completed your dentistry, you will gradually wake up refreshed, with little or no memory of the appointment. With sedation dentistry, we can complete multiple procedures, or even a complete smile makeover, sometimes in just one visit!

If you live in the Fairfax and Vienna area, and are interested in sedation dentistry, contact Dr. D. Gordon Rye to learn how you can receive exceptional dental care in the most comfortable manner possible.

How will I feel during dental sedations?

If I have sedation, will I need someone to accompany me?

Yes. You will need to have a companion drive you to our office and home again when you undergo sedation dentistry.

How long will I be relaxing during treatment?

You will be relaxing throughout your entire procedure – anywhere from two to six hours, depending on the procedures you receive.

Will I be monitored while I am under sedation?

Yes. A member of our team will remain with you at all times to monitor your vital signs and ensure that you are as comfortable as possible through your treatment.

Will I be completely unconscious?

No, you will not be unconscious. You will be responsive, but in a deeply relaxed state.

Will I feel pain?

For most patients, there is no discomfort whatsoever during procedures performed under sedation dentistry. In fact, many patients wake up feeling surprisingly well.
