Losing a tooth, whether by accident or from decay, leaves you with an uncomfortable hole or space in your smile and a dilemma. What is the best way to replace one missing tooth? You can replace a single tooth with a partial denture or a dental bridge, but for many people today, a single dental implant is the best option.

Replacing a Single Missing Tooth with Dental Implants to Restore Your Smile & Confidence

A partial denture to replace one tooth usually attaches to your other teeth with wires and you can use adhesive for more security. Like any denture, a partial has to be removed to be cleaned. A dental bridge can replace one tooth and is permanently cemented in place, but it is not designed to last forever. A bridge will need to be replaced after about 10 or 12 years.

The only permanent solution for a missing tooth is a dental implant. While implants have a higher upfront cost than other replacement options, they save you money in the long run because they require no special cleaners and can last a lifetime.

A dental implant consists of an artificial tooth, called a crown, which is affixed to the top of a titanium post. The first step in getting an implant is the surgical implantation of the post. The post is placed through your gums into your jaw bone, and after healing it will fuse to the bone and become a permanent part of your body. This is why dental implants are the only type of tooth replacement that saves the bone in your jaw from atrophy or wearing away. This keeps the crown of the implant secure, keeps your jaw’s bone structure sound and reduces the facial changes that come with missing teeth, and keeps all of your teeth in position. Implants are cleaned when you brush and floss your teeth.

Dental implants are really the next best thing to having your natural teeth, but an exam and consultation is necessary to determine if you are a candidate for a dental implant. You must have a sufficient amount of bone to support the implant. Your mouth should be generally healthy, and your overall health should be good. Some medical conditions like diabetes may make it less likely that implants will work for you. Smoking may also reduce the likelihood of success.

If you are interested in dental implants, the first step is to call us at (703) 565-2503 to set up a consultation appointment with Dr. Rye. The sooner you call, the sooner you can find out if a permanent dental implant is right for you.
