When speaking of dental implants, we are usually referring to permanent replacement teeth. Single tooth implants, multiple tooth implants and All-on-4 implants are all permanent and the artificial teeth (crowns) that are attached to them are also permanent. Mini implants are the one type of dental implant that while permanent, still usually involve removable teeth. Mini implants are smaller implants that are used to secure removable dentures in place, eliminating the need for adhesives and keeping dentures firmly in place until you remove them for cleaning.

The Flexible and Less Invasive Treatment Solution Provided by Mini Dental Implants

miniimplants1Mini implants are narrower than traditional implants, but are otherwise very similar. They are surgically implanted in the jaw and become permanent, but because of their smaller diameter, they often are suitable for patients who do not have enough jaw bone for traditional implants.

Because they are smaller, mini implants do not offer as much stability as regular implants. This is why they are usually used in conjunction with dental bridges or removable dentures, especially in the lower jaw. Lower dentures are often problematic for denture wearers. While upper dentures are assisted by suction to hold them in place, lower dentures rely on nothing but gravity to keep them in. Most denture wearers use adhesive, but it can wear off after several hours. Mini implants provide solid hold for dentures and virtually eliminate slippage, rising and open spaces that food can get caught in.

miniimplants2The surgical procedure involved in placing mini implants is less invasive than it is for traditional implants. Because of this and the smaller size, the process is usually much quicker, and the overall cost of mini implants is lower. It is often possible to receive temporary dentures to wear with your mini implants immediately while your permanent dentures are modified to attach to the implants.

Mini implants are a good choice for denture wearers who may not have enough healthy bone remaining to support regular dental implants. Mini implants can be much more affordable for many patients as well.
