Dental Check-ups are Even More Important for Mask Wearers

According to a recent report in the New York Post, wearing masks to prevent the spread of coronavirus can lead to oral hygiene problems. Some dentists have dubbed the condition “mask mouth.”
Wearing a mask often causes people to breath through their mouths, which increases dryness in the mouth and a decrease in saliva. Saliva fights bacteria, so dry mouth can lead to decaying teeth, receding gum lines and seriously sour breath. Gum disease — or periodontal disease — will eventually lead to strokes and an increased risk of heart attacks.
What can mask wearers do to maintain optimal oral health? Drink more water, cut down on caffeine, humidify your living or work space, use alcohol-free mouthwash, scrape your tongue, don’t smoke, and breathe through your nose. And, of course, keep up with visits to your dental hygienist.
