About Our Home: Fairfax, VA

History of Fairfax, VA

Fairfax began in the early 1700s when farmers from Virginia and Maryland started finding their way to the region. They formed the county of Fairfax in 1742, but the city of Fairfax wouldn’t come along until 1805; however, at the time, it was called the town of Providence.

A few decades later, the region became deeply involved in the American Civil War. A skirmish at the Fairfax Courthouse in June of 1861 resulted in the first death of a Confederate officer in the war, Capt. John Quincy Marr, and the first major battle of the Civil War, the First Battle of Bull Run, was fought in the region on July 21, 1861.

After the Civil War, Fairfax County underwent a boom in development. During the late 19th century, the dairy industry took off and an economic rebirth took hold. Schools, homes, businesses, barns, and churches all began to pop up throughout the county. It was during this period, in 1874, that Providence officially changed its name to Fairfax.

The 20th century brought several technological and infrastructure changes. Fairfax established a police force and fire department as well as several sports clubs, and it opened its first four-year high school in 1935. Fairfax also saw the introduction of multiple new motels and restaurants due to the high volume of travelers who passed through the town on their way to Washington, D.C.

The town of Fairfax was incorporated as the city of Fairfax in 1961.

The city of Fairfax is located almost directly in the center of Fairfax County and is approximately 15 miles southwest of Washington, D.C. The city is 6.3 square miles in size and has a population of about 24,000.
