Will Teeth Whitening Work for You?

Many people try over-the-counter teeth whitening options, only to be disappointed with the results or find that the whitening agent has caused lasting sensitivity problems in the mouth. If you have a discolored smile and have always wondered if anything could be done about it, or if you have tried store-bought remedies to no avail, there’s still hope.

The first step is to make an appointment to see Dr. Rye about your cosmetic dentistry concerns. Sometimes the whitening process can be started right away, or in the case of teeth that need repair, the necessary work will be done before whitening is undertaken.

As for the actual process, there are two basic options you can choose from, depending on your needs. For those who would like to try a premium teeth whitening system at home and prefer the convenience of not having to come into our Fairfax office for repeat visits, Dr. Rye can prescribe an at-home whitening solution.

Be advised that this is not the same kind of whitener that you would buy at a drugstore – this is a superior system that involves creating a custom-made tray to fit over the teeth. Every night, you will fill the tray with the provided whitening solution, and then wear the tray overnight. This process can take up to four weeks to get the completely white teeth.

The other option is in-office treatments, which would require you to visit our Fairfax office anywhere between three and six times, for an hour at a time. This is a great option if it’s convenient for you to come in for several appointments, and you would like to try out our power bleaching procedure.

Power bleaching is a laser treatment by which a whitening solution is applied and then activated by the laser. Adequate protection is given to the gums during this process. Some patients may notice temporary white patches at the gum line, but these will fade over a period of a few days. In addition, there may be some mild sensitivity, but this too will disappear gradually.

Regardless of which option you think will work best for you, you’ll need to come in for an initial consultation. Contact us today to make an appointment, and start looking forward to a whiter, brighter smile!

What Causes the Dark Line on My Gums?

You have seen smiles that you know have dental crowns in the front. You look at them and say to yourself that something is not natural. Many times, it is the dark rim of gum tissue that gives it away. The dark rim of gum tissue does not occur around natural teeth, only around teeth that have been covered with dental crowns.

The dark line is associated with an old porcelain dental crown. This style of dental crown is referred to as a porcelain fused-to-metal dental crown because it uses tooth-colored porcelain on the outside and it uses metal under the porcelain for strength. The dark line originates from the edge of the dental crowns where the porcelain and the metal meet at a knife-edge at the gum line. At the knife-edge, a very thin amount of the metal always shows. One of the illusionary techniques cosmetic dentists have used was to hide the thin dark line under the gum line. Over time, the gum tissue would recede and expose the dark line. In some patients the dark line would show through the gum and make it appear dark as well.

How Do You Get Rid of It?

The only way to eliminate the esthetic problem is to replace the dental crowns. When replacing just one single dental crown in the front, you should expect that it might take more than one try-in of the new dental crown before it is permanently cemented into place. Because your central incisors are the most prominent teeth in the mouth, matching them is the most difficult esthetic challenge. Only the best dental technicians are able to mimic one central incisor tooth next to another.

What Are Some of the Replacement Dental Crowns Like?

Some of the clever ways dentists and dental technicians have been able to mimic natural teeth is through the new advancements in dental materials. New all-tooth-colored ceramic dental crowns are the latest technological advancement cosmetic dentists have to recreate natural teeth. In comparison to porcelain fused-to-metal dental crowns, all-ceramic dental crowns do not contain any metal, thus no dark line can appear.

Some advantages and disadvantages of all-ceramic dental crowns are as follows:

Advantages of All-Ceramic Dental Crowns

  • High esthetics
  • Excellent fit
  • If gum recession occurs, there is no dark line

Disadvantages of All-Ceramic Dental Crowns

  • Not as strong as porcelain-fused-to-metal dental crowns
  • Cannot be used in all areas of the mouth

If you have questions about whether you would benefit from dental crowns or replacement of a dental crown, contact us at Rye Smiles for Life by calling 703-565-2503. We would be happy to address your dental questions and needs.

Do I need to Maintain My Whitened Teeth?

Although teeth whitening is not considered a major dental procedure, it’s still fairly involved, and as it can be time-consuming, it’s not something you’ll want to have to do all the time. So when you do you get your teeth whitened, you’ll want to do your best to keep them as bright as possible for as long as possible.

Over time, some staining of the teeth is inevitable. Food, drinks, cigarettes, and even aging can contribute to tooth discoloration. You can, however, do a few important things to make sure that you get the most out of your teeth whitening procedure.

  1. Quit smoking. It should go without saying that smoking is an unhealthy habit at best, but if you’re trying to keep your teeth white, you absolutely have to give up cigarettes. The stains that smoking leaves on the teeth are particularly stubborn, not to mention all the other problems that smoking can cause in terms of overall oral health.
  2. Avoid tea and coffee. Although most foods and drinks can stain the teeth to some extent, tea and coffee are particular culprits, especially since consumption of these drinks tends to be frequent. Although it sounds ridiculous, it can actually be helpful to drink your coffee through a straw, as it directs most of the liquid to the back of your mouth and prevents you from “bathing” your teeth in coffee.
  3. Make oral hygiene a priority. Brushing and flossing should always be a priority anyway, but especially so if you’ve had your teeth whitened and want to keep them that way. Brushing away food particles and residue from drinks is something you should do as soon as possible after eating, before any stains have had time to set in.
  4. Rinse. There will always be times when it’s just not convenient to brush after meals, perhaps when you’re at work, or attending an event. In those cases, do your best to rinse your mouth thoroughly with water after you eat or drink anything that might stain your teeth. Rinsing really helps a lot to keep the mouth clean until you are able to brush properly.

If you have not had your teeth whitened yet but would like to explore your options, we provide both in-office and at home whitening treatments for every lifestyle.

How Important Is Cosmetic Dentistry?

Historically, we have been taught that those with a healthy mouth have nothing to complain about, and that a few crooked or poorly-shaped teeth are no big deal and should just be accepted as part of the bargain. While it’s true that many cosmetic issues don’t affect the health of the teeth, the psychological impact of a less-than-beautiful smile cannot be underestimated. Some people go their entire lives feeling embarrassed about their teeth, hiding their mouths when possible and never smiling for pictures.

The good news is, with the advancements and affordability of modern cosmetic dentistry, you no longer have to put up with a smile you don’t like. If you know you could look a lot better and want to explore your options, speaking to the dentist about setting up a cosmetic dentistryplan is a great way to get the ball rolling. It shouldn’t be seen as vanity to want cosmetic changes – feeling self-conscious about your smile can severely affect your self-esteem and make you not enjoy life as much as you could.

One comment complaint is excess gum tissue. A “gummy” smile can easily be changed with gum re-contouring, in which a state-of-the-art diode laser removes extra gum tissue quickly and safely. This can help give teeth a better shape, and can correct problems with teeth that appear too short, or gums that are uneven or overwhelm the smile.

For patients who want improvements made to both the shape and/or length of the teeth, porcelain veneers can be a great option. Veneers fit over the existing teeth, and can fill gaps, extend short teeth, or repair chipped tooth edges. Today’s veneers are much improved over those of the past, and look natural enough to be mistaken for real teeth.

For minor changes or those on a budget, there’s always dental bonding, which involves applying a putty to cracked or misaligned teeth. The putty can be manipulated into the desired shap. and then hardened, smoothed, and polished. The result is similar to those given by porcelain veneers, but often at a fraction of the cost.

Don’t hesitate if you’re unhappy with how your smile looks – contact us today to set up an appointment for a consultation, and start looking forward to the smile you’ve always wanted.
